Leigh Freeman was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1950 and was the son of a World War Two veteran. He was drafted in 1969 and trained at Fort Ord, California. When he arrived in Vietnam (April 1970), he was placed in Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. Charlie Company was sent to places such as Firebase Ripcord and Gladiator
