Bernard Malewitz was born in Grand Rapids, and studied engineering at the University of Detroit before being drafted at the start of the Korean War. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers and taught water distillation techniques for two years in Fort Meyer, Washington, D.C. He worked to improve training procedures and manuals to be more useful to soldiers in the field.
